Brigham Young University–Hawaii Academic Vice President Isaiah Walker announced two leadership changes in Academics this week: Dr. Brent Green as the associate academic vice president for accreditation, assessment, and curriculum and Dr. Nancy Tarawhiti as the dean of the Faculty of Education & Social Work. Both appointments are effective August 16.
"I am grateful for the dedication shown by our academic leadership,” Walker said. “Mahalo to those who have served and taken on new responsibilities. It is an honor to work with Nancy and Brent in their new roles.”
Brent Green
Dr. Brent Green is currently the dean of the Faculty of Education & Social Work. He brings thirty-two years of experience in teaching English as a second language at the university level. Green has been a member of TESOL International Association since 1993 and has been a regular presenter at the annual TESOL International Convention & Expo.
Green has served as the chair of the Faculty Advisory Council for the BYU–Hawaii. Brent earned a Bachelor of Science in teaching English to speakers of other languages from BYU–Hawaii and his master’s in TESOL from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He obtained his doctorate in applied linguistics from the University of California, Los Angeles.
Brent serves as a primary teacher in the Wahiawa 3rd Ward and an institute teacher in the Mililani Hawaii Stake. He and his wife, Noelani, have four children.
Green replaces Rose Ram, who will be returning to the Joseph F. Smith Library as library director. Michael Aldrich, who previously served as library director, will continue to work at the Joseph F. Smith Library as a reference librarian.
Nancy Tarawhiti
Dr. Nancy Tarawhiti is an alumnus of BYU–Hawaii. She earned a Bachelor of Science in office management in 1990. She continued her education at BYU in Provo, obtaining a master’s degree in TESOL, followed by a doctorate in philosophy from Auckland University of Technology. Her research interests include second language writing pedagogy, language learning strategies, metacognition, and peace linguistics. Nancy returned to BYU–Hawaii in 2014 and is currently an associate professor in the English as an International Language Program. She has served as the EIL Program director for the past three years.
Tarawhiti serves as a seminary teacher for the Laie Hawaii Stake.
Tarawhiti replaces Dr. Brent Green, who served as dean since January 2023.
