Academic Vice President Isaiah Walker announced Stephanie Robertson as the new director of the Joseph F. Smith Library. Robertson began this position on October 10, 2025.
“There are many exciting developments happening in the library right now, and Stephanie is the right person to guide these innovations,” commented Walker. “She brings a passion for information and education, along with the leadership skills needed to direct the library in this new chapter.”
Robertson previously served as an adjunct faculty member in the university’s English Program, an outreach librarian for the Joseph F. Smith Library, and co-chaired the Undergraduate Research Conference. She also worked as a librarian at Laie Elementary School.
“I am grateful for this challenging new opportunity to grow as the library director at the Joseph F. Smith Library here at BYU–Hawaii. Stepping into this role is something I never really envisioned for myself—I was very content serving as the marketing and outreach librarian. But this experience has allowed me to learn and stretch in new ways, to draw upon the skills I’ve developed during my time at BYU–Hawaii, and to rely more deeply on the Spirit as I face new tasks and challenges each day. I’m thankful for the chance to serve our wonderful campus community and to continue learning alongside them.”
Robertson earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from BYU–Hawaii, as well as a Master of Arts in English with an emphasis in composition and rhetoric and a Master of Library and Information Science in academic librarianship—both from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.
Originally from California, Robertson now calls Laie home. She has served in many Church callings over the years, including in the Relief Society and Young Women presidencies, as a Primary teacher, and currently as a Young Women class advisor.
She and her husband met at BYU–Hawaii when they were students. During her college years, Robertson worked at Ke Alaka‘i as the editor-in-chief and at the Reading/Writing Lab as a tutor. The Robertsons are the parents of four children—their oldest is serving in the Nevada Las Vegas West Mission, two attend Kahuku High and Intermediate School, and their youngest attends Laie Elementary School. Her love and appreciation for her mentors and colleagues continue to inspire her as a faculty member and now as the library director.
