Bishop H. David Burton Speaks at CES Fireside

Presiding Bishop of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, H. David Burton, spoke at a worldwide CES fireside broadcast via satellite from BYU–Hawaii Cannon Activities Center on Sunday, May 2, 2010.

"I have tried to place myself in your shoes and imagine what it is like to walk the paths you are walking," he said, as he delved into his topic—The Road of Life. "There are important aspects of our lives which have eternal consequences which are constant and never change. My years of experience may give credence to a few observations gleaned from the school of hard knocks," he said.

"May I share some perceptions which may be obvious to virtually all of us? We are living in a time when there is turmoil flourishing between nations and cultures of the world. The future course mankind will take is unclear. Fear permeates the souls of many. Some are losing faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and for many others hope is only a fleeting dream. Satan’s never-ending pursuit for the hearts and souls of men continues unabated. The so-called 'X-Generation' seems uncertain and perhaps confused because of the mixed signals extended by society," he stated.

He shared a quote by Charles Dodgson, better known by his pen name Lewis Carroll—"If you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there." Echoing Dodgson, he spoke of obedience and faith by "holding to the iron rod and traveling the prescribed road."

If we are faithful and diligent on the road of life, "we can expect the grand and glorious opportunity to once again return and live eternally with our Father in Heaven, enjoying all the blessings He has identified for those who graduate this mortal existence with excellence."
