BYU-Hawaii faculty member, Ronald S. Jackson, died July 18, 2004, at his home in Laie, Hawaii after a long battle with cancer. His affiliation and dedication to BYU-Hawaii spanned 35 years. Ron was born in Fullerton, California, in 1942 and grew up in a typical Southern California lifestyle where surfing at the Huntington Beach pier and the "Wedge" were among his favorite activities. After graduating from Fullerton Union High School in 1960 he attended Fullerton Junior College where he majored in physical education, was on the wrestling team and threw the javelin for the state champion track team. In 1962 Ron was called to serve in the Alaskan-Canadian Mission. After completing his mission he returned to Brigham Young University where he began to study in earnest and met his wife, Letty. They were married in 1966. He graduated from BYU in 1967 and continued graduate work there, completing his M.S. in Child Development and Psychology in 1978. He also completed a Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin. Ron was an instructor at BYU when he saw a bulletin announcing a job opening at the Church College of Hawaii. He applied, was soon interviewed by Eric B. Shumway, and accepted an offer to teach in Laie. With support from BYU-Hawaii, Ron was able to do postgraduate study at Julius Maximillians University in Wurzburg, Germany, in 1976 and pursue a Ph.D. at the postdoctoral study at the University of Hawaii in Cultural Psychology and Developmental Disabilities. At BYU-Hawaii Ron has served on the Promotional Review Committee, Academic Planning Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, and the Faculty Advisory Committee. He also served as the Chairperson of the Department of Psychology and the Faculty Athletics Representative. Ron and Letty have been married for 38 years. They have five children and three grandchildren. He has served as bishop of the BYU-Hawaii 4th Ward, as a stake high counselor, counselor to several bishops, was a temple worker and gospel doctrine teacher in the Laie 3rd Ward. Of Professor Jackson, President Shumway said, "Ron Jackson has always been a loyal and energetic faculty member and friend. He was always insightful, assertive and very generous. Even when he was struck by illness, he seemed to be more conscientious about his students. We've never had a faculty member who loved his students more than Ron. He challenged them, but he adored them." Ron was a favorite among the Laie community, especially on Halloween, when he wore costumes of all genres. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at the Laie Hawaii Stake Center (Iosepa St.) with viewing from 9:30am - 11:00 a.m., funeral service from 11:00 a.m. - noon and burial to follow at Laie Cemetery.
