BYU-Hawaii Staff Tribute to Eric B. Shumway

This tribute was read by Judd Whetten, Wednesday, 20 June 2007, at the Grand Mahalo in honor of the Shumways.

I talked with Sione Feinga who was here when the Shumways arrived, fresh off the boat.  During their early years in Hau’ula, they adapted quickly to the environment and blended into the unique and powerful culture of Aloha.

As a University support team, we benefit in many ways from a man with local spirit and presidential stature who leads by example:

➢    He treasures Sister Shumway at his side in all endeavors
➢    He takes time to listen to us
➢    He and Sister Shumway always express sincere gratitude
➢    They frequently share their family musical talents
➢    He plays hard, to the point of drawing blood at noontime basketball games
➢    He is not afraid to roll up his sleeves and get his hands dirty.

He has shared with us the counsel his father gave him as a boy, “Always work hard and earn more than your employer can afford to pay you.”  His work ethic is an example to all of us.

When we first meet leaders in high positions we usually put them on a pedestal.  One colleague mentioned he held President Shumway in high esteem “even after he got to know him.” Another mentioned that President and Sister Shumway truly represent in a very positive way the scriptural admonition “when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.”

We send with them our heartfelt Aloha.
