BYU-Hawaii Top Seed and Host for NCAA II Regional

The BYU-Hawaii Seasiders received the number one seed in the NCAA II West Regional Basketball Tournament today and will serve as the host team for the tournament. The Seasiders, 19-3 on the season will face number eight seed Cal State-Bakersfield in the first round on Friday at 8:30 pm HST. The Seasiders received an automatic bid to the tournament as the champions of the Pacific West Conference and will host the tournament for the first time since becoming affiliated with the NCAA in 1998. Cal State-Bakersfield received an at-large bid to the tournament after finishing the season with a 19-8 record and a fifth-place finish in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The only other automatic bid in the West Region went to CCAA champion and second seed Cal State-San Bernardino. The Coyotes finished the season at 21-6 and will face seventh-seeded Sonoma State at 2:30 pm HST on Friday. Sonoma State tied for third place in the CCAA and brings an 18-9 record into the tournament. The third seed in the tournament is Humboldt State of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC). The Lumberjacks finished tied for first in their conference and have a 22-5 record. They will play UH-Hilo, who finished second to the Seasiders in the PacWest, on Friday at noon in the first game of the tournament. UH-Hilo finished the season with an 18-9 record. The final matchup of the tournament is between fourth seeded Cal Poly-Pomona, second place in the CCAA and a 20-7 record, against Alaska-Fairbanks, tied for first in the GNAC with a 20-7 mark overall. The winners of the San Bernardino/Sonoma game and the Hilo/Humboldt game will play on Saturday in the semifinals at 5:00 pm HST while the winners of the other two games will tip off at 7:30 pm HST in the other Saturday semifinal. The finals will be on Monday at 7:00 pm.
