Throughout October, BYU Television is helping BYU-Hawaii celebrate its goldenanniversary by airing devotionals and special programming related to the Laiecampus.
"We are excited to be able to run these programs for the 50th anniversary," saidJim Bell, manager of marketing and communications for BYUTV. "BYU-Hawaiiprovides the diversity in our programming that broadens our appeal to the world."
Part of the mission of BYUTV is to keep people connected to the three-campussystem, he said. "BYU-Hawaii plays a key role in that, and adds a diversityto our station that is not available in Provo, or Idaho. As a television programthat reflects our faith, we want to show the international flavor" ofThe Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Napua Baker, Vice President of University Advancement, shared her excitementin having the university featured at this historic time.
"I can't wait to hear back from our alumni, "she said, "especiallythe ones who haven't seen our campus in such a long time. They will beable to see the progress and get a glimpse of the future."
Programming began Sunday, October 2 and will be running throughout the monthof October.
The four programs being aired include:
Voices of Peace: Na Leo Malu. Take a tour with the 2004 BYU-Hawaii ConcertChoir as they journey to Japan and Korea under the direction of James A.Smith. The50-member group spent 18 days in Asia sharing music from around the world,as well as representing the Church and the university. The choir includedstudents from Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Fiji, Thailand, Philippines,Korea,Kiribati, China, Sweden, Canada, and the mainland United States. Watch aschoir members showcase their love of music and the people of the world. Programmingresumes October 10th (11 a.m.), 21st (5 p.m.), 22nd (8 p.m.), and 30th (9p.m.).
Laie from the Heart. Sponsored by BYU-Hawaii and the Polynesian CulturalCenter, this documentary provides an exciting look into music from aroundthe world,as well as the university's own music program. Enjoy the cultural selections performed by six different BYU-Hawaii groups under thedirection ofDarren Duerden, James A. Smith, and Merrilee Web. Programming begins October6th (11 a.m.) and 19th (5 p.m.).
Beyond the Dream: The Story of the Polynesian Cultural Center. In October2003, a BYUTV production team traveled to Laie, Hawaii, for the PCC's 40thanniversary, and, along with a BYU-Hawaii crew, captured the memories of over70 current andformer administrators, alumni, and friends gathered from all over the world.The resulting documentary combines excerpts from these interviews with colorfulfootage, evocative Polynesian music and dance, and rarely seen archival materialfor a truly memorable viewing experience. Learn how and why these culturesconverged in one of the most geographically remote places in the world, turningit intoone of the most popular tourist spots in Hawaii. Showing October 7th (11 a.m.),16th (8 a.m.), 20th (5 p.m.), and 23rd (10 p.m.).
