The Overnight Camp featuring Stephen Curry for the Warriors Basketball Camp was held at BYU-Hawaii this past week July 2-5, 2016. The four-day/three-night camp took place on the campus for the first time ever. Camp was directed by Warriors Youth Basketball Staff, consisting of collegiate players as well as high school and college coaches. Registration for the camp took place back in February this year.
Approximately 200 boys and girls between ages 9-16 of all skill levels and abilities arrived to participate. The program sought to help participants “have the opportunity to work on their game, improve their skills and learn from the best player on the planet.” Overnight campers stayed in the BYU-Hawaii campus dorms, while the extended day camping option was available for participants that had nearby accommodations, and all meals were provided at the university’s Club Dining Facility
Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors and NBA MVP was in attendance at the camp for three of the four days interacting with campers and demonstrating his personal workout routine. Additionally, each night Curry spoke to the participants for an hour describing his basketball experience. The session featured designated times for special lectures, autographs, and photo sessions with Curry.
A typical camp day featured a variety of competitions and drills including fundamental skill stations and continued skills competitions, 5-on-5 games, 3-on-3 games, shooting competitions, agility and basketball movement drills. Free time was available for participants to return to dorms, enjoy the gym, or swim at the pool located in the McKay Gym. Each camper received a reversible Stephen Curry camp jersey, camp t-shirt, headband, and certificate. Parents and family members were invited to the awards ceremony and family meal on the final day of camp on Tuesday, July 5.
