October 27 Tsunami Evacuation Update (1:30 AM)

UPDATE: 1:30 AM
Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has cancelled the Tsunami Warning for the State of Hawaii and has issued a Tsunami Advisory as of 12:54 AM. Harbors and beaches will remain closed, but it is safe to return home, according to a statement by the Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu. Because the condition of currents in the ocean is still unpredictable, the standard ALL CLEAR notification will not be given for this event. But it has been confirmed that it is safe to return to evacuated areas.

UPDATE: 12:30 AM
Pacific Tsunami Warning Center continues to monitor wave activity statewide. No reports of significant damage. ALL CLEAR still not given, but is expected soon.

UPDATE: 11:30 PM
Some small waves have been reported around the state and are being monitored by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. At this point, no damage has been reported. Campus is secure, and the evacuation is still in effect. ALL CLEAR will be issued once it is safe to return home.

There has been a major earthquake off the coast of Canada which has triggered a Tsunami Warning for the State of Hawaii. The Hawaii Department of Emergency Management has sounded the notification sirens which signals an evacuation for low-lying coastal regions. The first potential waves are estimated to arrive in Hawaii at 10:28 PM Saturday. More information will be shared as it is available.

For students on campus, as a reminder, the second floor of TVA and Hales are the designated campus tsunami evacuation zones. For students living off campus in Laie, Temple Hill (by the Laie Hawaii Temple) is the designated tsunami evacuation zone. Students and campus community have been notified via the campus emergency notification system, and the emergency sirens are sounding every few minutes.

Updates will be posted here as they are available. Any questions may be sent to communications@byuh.edu or via the university Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/byuhawaii
