Reaching the Top: Celebrating a Milestone

When a construction project reaches its highest building point, the milestone is often commemorated with a ceremonial ‘topping’ or ‘capping’ of the building. BYU–Hawaii’s new multi-use building reached this point in December and celebrated the milestone with students, faculty, staff, contractors and community members on Thursday, December 13, 2012.

In the weeks leading up to the “Reach the Top” event, hundreds of individuals in the extended BYU–Hawaii ohana, including alumni and friends, signed a large Seasider flag that was posted atop of the new edifice as part of the ceremony. The flag will fly throughout most of the remainder of the construction project representing the widespread excitement surrounding the future of the campus. In addition to posting the flag, attendees at the “Reach the Top” event got the chance to see the construction project close up from inside the dust fence.

“This construction milestone is a step toward our future vision for the university,” said David Lewis, vice president of construction and facilities management. “When I see that flag, I’m grateful for all involved and appreciate the support of so many as we build the buildings that will serve our students.”

Progress continues on all seven buildings under construction at BYU–Hawaii, including three single-student dormitories, one single-student apartment building, two married-student apartment buildings, and the multi-use building. Stay updated on campus construction progress at OrangeCone.byuh.edu.
