‘Evening of Concertos’ Set to Wow with Special Performance

On Wednesday, November 16, 2011, the Music Department will present the ‘Evening of Concertos’ concert, with performers including BYU–Hawaii’s Concert Choir and seven soloists, accompanied by an orchestra comprised of both the Honolulu Symphony and BYU–Hawaii.

“Essentially, we’ve tried to create a bridge experience that allows students to work and interact with high-level professionals,” explains Scott McCarrey, associate professor of music at BYU–Hawaii. “This is an inspiring experience for the students and the community.”

The Honolulu Symphony has participated with the university in past performances, including the Golden Jubilee celebration in 2005 as well as other oratorios. The relationship between the university and the Honolulu Symphony is deep-rooted, this being the sixth ‘Evening of Concertos’ since 1998. “Several of the musicians are special instructors at BYU–Hawaii and travel here each week to offer private lessons to students,” says McCarrey. “Some of those students in past performances have gone on to become professionals themselves and have greatly benefited from their experiences here.”

The seven soloist to perform at this year’s concert comprise four vocalists: Ben Hoff, Pono Cabrinha, Sarah Tovey, and Mari Sasaki; and three instrumentalists: Daniel Edwards, percussionist; JiHye Cha, flutist; and Xu Han, pianist. They were each chosen through the Undergraduate Research Conference during the spring semester. Nineteen students competed for the seven available spaces in the 2011 ‘Evening of Concertos’ concert. The committee of judges included Dr. David Kammerer, Music Department chair; Michael Belnap, director of Concert Choir; and Dr. Jon Magnusson, a composer and formal faculty at Princeton University.

The program for Wednesday’s performance will be as follows:

• “Epiphany,” from Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street

• Rossini’s La danza

• Puccini’s “O mio babbino caro,” from the opera Gianni Schicchi

• “Qui sedes ad dexteram patris” from Vivaldi’s Gloria

• Ney Rosauro’s Concerto for marimba and orchestra (first movement)

• Carl Reinecke’s Concerto for flute and orchestra (first movement)

• Mozart’s Concerto in A major for piano, K. 488 (first movement)

• The Hawai’i premiere of Robert Cundick’s “Song of the heart,” with tenor-soloist Michael Belnap

To maintain the best experience for those in attendance, it is asked that there be no cell phones, videos, or children under the age of six permitted at the performance. Recording of any kind is not permitted. Everyone’s cooperation is greatly appreciated.
