Mongolia Becomes a Promising Destination for BYU–Hawaii TESOL Interns

With the growing global demand for English education amid AI growth, TESOL students now have more opportunities than ever. Recently, six BYU–Hawaii TESOL students traveled to Mongolia to teach English as part of their internships, marking an exciting expansion of international experience. Mongolia is emerging as a promising new destination for TESOL students, with both public and private schools increasingly seeking qualified English teachers and expressing strong interest in welcoming more TESOL graduates in the future.

Mongolia Opens Internship Opportunities for BYU–Hawaii Students

Mongolia is now an exciting new destination for internship opportunities for BYU–Hawaii students. The first cohort of five students recently began two-month internships with a tour operator based in the Mongolian countryside. The group consists of four American students and one Tongan student, all majoring in Business Management and Hospitality & Tourism Management. Their internship roles span key areas such as finance, operations, marketing, and new product development.

Mason Allred's Book "Seeing Things" Wins Award from the Media Ecology Association

Professor Allred's recent book "Seeing Things: Technologies of Vision and the Making of Mormonism" was awarded with the Susanne K. Langer Award for Outstanding Scholarship in the Ecology of Symbolic Form from the Media Ecology Association in 2025.

TESOL Students Gain Online Teaching Experience with Mongolian Secondary Schools

Over two semesters, classes led by Professors Mark Wolfersberger and Tom Court, involving more than 30 BYU–Hawaii TESOL students, successfully taught English online to over 1,300 Mongolian secondary school students. This initiative marked the first time BYUH TESOL students engaged in online English teaching as part of their coursework. The experience provided valuable hands-on training and meaningful cultural exchange. The program was highly praised by both public and private schools in Mongolia, who expressed strong interest in continuing and expanding the collaboration.

Tserennyam Sukhbaatar Published A Research Paper "CATERPILLAR IN MONGOLIA: STRATEGY FOR AN EMERGING MARKET"

The case study is the first-ever published research focused on the global brand Caterpillar’s operations in an emerging market like Mongolia. The study highlights Wagner Equipment’s achievement of becoming the first Caterpillar dealership in Mongolia in 1996, following an extensive international expansion effort. It was Professor Tserennyam Sukhbaatar’s first solo-authored, peer-reviewed research paper. Read full research.

Dr. Erica Glenn composed an original Worldwide Requiem for choir and orchestra, which the BYUH Hoʻolōkahi Chamber Choir premiered at Carnegie Hall

The piece, performed in collaboration with the New England Symphonic Ensemble, mourns global tragedies through a fusion of Latin and six other languages. Each movement reflects a specific catastrophe and honors the lives lost in Lahaina, Ukraine, Tonga, Palestine, the Philippines, and Japan. Read full article.
