Jubilee Website Keeps University 'ohana Informed, Involved

A new Golden Jubilee website provides a wealth of information about the ongoing celebration and the university's institutional and personal histories.

The website features several informational resources to help users keep abreast with the ongoing Jubilee celebration. It also includes several interactive tools that make it fun and easy to learn more about the heritage of CCH/BYU-Hawaii and its faculty, staff and students while reminiscing the past 50 years. Here are a few highlights:

The Jubilee home page displays the current activities of the Jubilee celebration. A comprehensive listing of all activities throughout the year can be found on the Calendar page, keeping users updated on upcoming events. The calendar also offers historical trivia of the school for each day and month.

The Genuine Gold page features vignettes of CCH/BYU-Hawaii alumni. The term "genuine gold" comes from President David O. McKay's groundbreaking speech in 1955:

"One man said the world needs men, true men, who cannot be bought or sold; men who will scorn to violate truth – genuine gold. That's what this school is going to produce. More than that, they'll be leaders. Not leaders only in this island, but everywhere. All the world is hungering for them and, best of all, the world is recognizing them."

New genuine gold stories will continually be posted on the website throughout the Jubilee celebration. In addition to the website, a Genuine Gold display will be unveiled in February on Founder's Day in the Aloha Center Mall to honor exemplary graduates and faculty.

The Interviews page is similar to the Genuine Gold, but it broadens the scope to include stories of faculty, staff, friends, community members and others who have had a profound influence on the university and the community. Users are invited to share their own genuine gold stories or suggest other faculty and alumni to be recognized on either the Genuine Gold or Interviews page.

The Jubilee website also includes two "blogs" or weblogs. One is the Favorite Faculty Blog, where users can post and read comments about experiences and impressions of faculty members at CCH/BYU-Hawaii. In the short time that the blog has been running, almost 100 entries have been submitted.

Similar to the faculty blog is the Scrapbook page. Users can submit thoughts, memories and pictures on any subject, from athletics and school events to friends and weekend activities. In other words, it is a cyber "talk story" about the good old days in Laie.

Both blogs can be searched by keywords so you can navigate easily down memory lane. All alumni and anyone with ties to the university are encouraged to participate. Submissions are reviewed before posting and are subject to minor editing.

Another interactive web page that can be searched by date and keyword or read chronologically is the BYUH Timeline page. It traces the development of CCH/BYU-Hawaii by highlighting many of the significant events in the history of school.

Other pages offer registration, souvenirs, travel arrangements, PCC ticket information and more. Log on to see everything that is offered and check back frequently, as the site will be updated throughout the Jubilee celebration. At the end of the year, the entire site, including photos and video clips of other on-campus events, will be available on a "yearbook" DVD.

The Jubilee website can be accessed at w2.byuh.edu/jubilee or through the BYU-Hawaii homepage by clicking on the flash icon in the lower left corner.
