Mufi Hannemann, mayor of Honolulu, recently visited BYU–Hawaii on April 14, speaking at a luncheon hosted by the "Mahalo No Ka Hana" (Laie) chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP). As mayor, Hannemann represents the entire island of Oahu. (Left to Right: Anna Kaanga, Madie Neave, Jacquie Alisa, Mayor Mufi Hannemann, Bae Aumua, Denise Mitchell, and Hans Taala)
After an introduction by Sandra Sagisi, deputy director of the Department of Customer Services for the City, Mayor Hannemann presented his maxims on good leadership values. His maxims brought unity to his administration—maxims that closely mirrored LDS Church president Gordon B. Hinckley's 'Six Be's'.
Mayor Hannemann encouraged those in attendance to not give up when faced with adversity. He expressed strong convictions in his faith as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, citing examples from his public service when he was encouraged to downplay or go against his standards but did not. Although many viewed his standards as a hindrance to his aspirations as a public servant, the criticism only inspired him to do better.
Mayor Hannemann closed his remarks by expressing gratitude to the IAPP members from BYU–Hawaii, PCC, HRI, and other regional businesses that were gathered at the luncheon for making the Laie community "better than ever before." He issued a proclamation honoring Laie's chapter of the IAAP, proclaiming the week of April 19-23 to be Administrative Professionals Week.
