Laie, HI — The Brigham Young University Hawaii men's basketball team lost to Chaminade Friday night, 97-83, in a game played in the Seasiders' "OldGym" (the Cannon Activities Center was being set up for graduation). The change in venue did not prove lucky for the Seasiders, however, as the Silverswordsout-rebounded them 37-27. BYU-Hawaii’s 22 turnovers didn't help, despite shooting a higher percentage from the field and from the three-pointline.
Chaminade took the lead early in the game and held a ten-point advantage,48-38, at halftime. BYU-Hawaii cut the lead to four points twice, with the last time coming at 75-71, but the Silverswords quickly got the lead back to double digits and claimed the win.
Paul Peterson led the Seasiders with 22 points and nine assists. Austin Smylieadded 19 points and eight rebounds while Eric Boyce came off the bench for 11 points. Peterson, Boyce, and Dane Runia each hit three three-pointers as the Seasiders shot 12-23 from long range.
Chris Reeves led five Silverswords in double figures with 23 points. ZachWhiting had 17, Chris Powell and Dylan McCune each had 12, and CoreyCambell had 11 for Chaminade. Powell led all players with 10 rebounds.
Chaminade improved to 4-4 with the win while the Seasiders dropped to2-3 for the season. The game was the first Pacific West Conference contest of the season for both teams.
BYU-Hawaii will play Chaminade again on Tuesday in Honolulu at McCabeGymnasium at 7:30 p.m.
