The BYU-Hawaii President's Council named Dr. Yee Kong Peter Chan, assistant
professor of instructional design and development, its "teacher of
the year" at the August 26 ohana or family meeting of university
faculty and staff.
"This is always a difficult time, because so many of you who are not honored in this way deserve to be," said university President Eric B. Shumway in announcing Chan, a 1995 BYU-Hawaii information systems alumnus from China who went on to earn his doctorate at BYU in Provo and returned to his alma mater three years ago. He added that others who have previously received awards "could easily receive them again," but school policy limits the award to one time.

Summertime is Construction Time at BYU-Hawaii
By

Mike Foley | University Advancement | 19 July 2005
Though summer term is usually not as busy as the rest of the academic year
at BYU-Hawaii, it seems various parts of the campus have been under construction
for the past several months.
BYU-Hawaii Physical Plant Director Judd Whetten agreed. "Our focus is to get these projects done during the summer when it has less of an impact on students and faculty."
For example, Whetten pointed out that a new parking lot behind the Stake Center was completed about a month ago, and a two-to-three-month project to replace some sidewalks, curbs and gutters, and to repave some of the roads "is really making a mess at the moment. We've widened some of the sidewalks, improved the drainage a bit, and replaced some of the older sections."

Mike Foley | University Advancement | 13 June 2005
BYU-Hawaii faculty, staff and students successfully hosted approximately 300
widespread international members of the Global Chinese Society for Computers
in Education on campus from June 6-9 during the group's ninth annual but
first-ever conference outside of Asia.
"From all aspects, I think the conference was a success, both in the paper quality as well as the other functions," said GCSCE organizing chairman Dr. Tak-wai Chan of Taiwan Central University. "One surprising thing to us, this was supposed to be a western place, but somehow this conference inherited the spirit here [in Hawaii]. It's not only the mountains and the beaches, but you have a human paradise here."
