Brigham Young University Hawaii's Head Tennis Coach, Dr. David Porter, was inducted into the United States Professional Tennis Association's (USPTA) Hawaii Division Hall of Fame Tuesday, October 18.
“I am very honored to have been selected and inducted into the USPTA Hawaii Division Hall of Fame,” said Porter. “It was a very special moment for me. I am thankful to my wife Lorrie for the support she has given me during the many times I have been away on USPTA business.”
Porter becomes just the second person inducted into the Hawaii Division, joining Jim Schwitters, former University of Hawaii Tennis Coach.
“Jim Schwitters was the pioneer for the USPTA in Hawaii,” Porter continued. “He was one of our original members and laid the groundwork upon which all other professionals built. He is also the winningest coach in NCAA tennis history with over 1,300 career victories; both men’s and women’s.”
Porter, who also coaches both men’s and women’s teams, has already posted a list of accomplishments equally as impressive in his 21 seasons at BYU-Hawaii.
To-date, he has compiled a 519-107 record for a gaudy .829 winning percentage with the men's team (since 1984). During his 13 years at the helm of the women's team, however, his record is even more impressive, winning 382 matches with just 14 losses for an incredible .965 winning percentage. His combined record with the two teams stands at 901-121 for a percentage of .882. Porter has been named National Coach of the Year five times (NAIA and NCAA II).
He has won nine national championships at the collegiate level. He won two NAIA titles with the women's team and has led the Seasiders to two NCAA II men's titles and five NCAA II women's championships. In 2002 and 2003 he became the only collegiate coach to ever lead both the men's and women's teams to back-to-back national championships.
Since BYU-Hawaii joined the NCAA II in the fall of 1998, Porter's men's teamsare 182-31 (.854) and his women's teams are 233-2 (.991).
