“Ka Ua Ka’a” Shares Magic of Hawaiian Culture
September 14, 2007 01:05 PM
Rosemarie Howard | University Advancement | 14 September 2007
“There is a Wind and Rain particular to Maui that rises at twilight. It whispers of other places and other times, both mythic and real. It blows between daylight and night, between times and worlds. It is hopeful and cleansing. The ancient Hawaiian name for the wind and rain is ‘Ulalena !”
So begins the storyline for “Ka Ua Ka’a,” the traveling 45-minute version of ‘Ulalena. Written by former cast member, Pono Murray, the production “intertwines Hawaiian myths and legends through dramatic interpretation, modern and traditional hula, acrobatics, song and chant,” said Matthew Erickson, marketing and sales manager for the production company.

ROTC Classes Offered Fall Semester on BYU-Hawaii Campus
August 07, 2007 11:36 AM
Rosemarie Howard | University Advancement | 7 August 2007
When Serafina Saui’a came to BYU-Hawaii in 1993 as a freshman from Samoa, she was not thinking about a military career. She wanted to serve a mission, and came to BYU-Hawaii because it was a Church school, and she had an older sister already attending.
But while taking a break from an economics class she ran into an Army recruiter in the hallway. It took six months for him to talk her into enrolling in the ROTC program at University of Hawaii, but at the beginning of her junior year she did enroll.
She had participated in the Junior ROTC program while in high school, learning leadership traits such as how to take charge and to work as part of a team. “It was the most beneficial class I ever took,” said Captain Saui’a. She graduated from BYU-Hawaii in 1997 with a B.S. in Information Systems.

BYU-Hawaii Youth Music Conservatory Enters Second Year
July 11, 2007 05:22 PM
Rosemarie Howard | University Advancement | 10 July 2007
The Brigham Young University Hawaii Youth Conservatory began in 2006 as a joint venture between the Department of Fine Arts and the Center for Instructional Technology & Outreach (CITO) to offer instruction in piano and violin to members of the local La’ie community. The conservatory also provides practical teaching opportunities for students majoring in music on campus.
“Having the conservatory makes it possible for the piano majors to augment their classroom experience with practical opportunities by observing and assisting experienced teachers, and by offering private instruction to young students,” said Scott McCarrey, Chair of the Department of Fine Arts and Associate Professor of Music.
