Safia Sheikh Named PacWest Player of the Week

The Seasiders Women’s Basketball team has recently returned from a successful Northern California road trip where junior guard, Safia Sheikh, was named Pacific West Conference Player of the Week.

See a press release at thepacwest.com.

Safia Sheikh is third in the PacWest in scoring, and she also leads the league in three-point field goal percentage at 47.1%. In the game against Notre Dame de Namur where the Seasiders won 83-65 on Thursday, December 8, in California, Safia scored a total of 25 points and was able to make 7 three-pointers. In the game against Dominican the Seasiders’ great team work and Safias’ sharp shooting enabled her to score 32 points. The Seasiders came away with a win of 85-75.

As the Northern California tour went on, the team was able to reduce turnovers significantly from 32 – 18 which showed in the results. Taryn Skahill commented on the team’s wins, “We figured out the things we needed to work on and fixed them to end with two solid wins at the end of the trip”.

Coming away from the road trip with two wins and a stronger team will be an advantage to them for the season. Marian Sheikh said, “We won the last two games, not only because of a superb shooting Safia, but because of team effort!”

Marian also highlights that each player has strengths that contribute to the team’s ongoing success, she said, “We have point guards with the role to bring the ball safely up the court and get us into plays. We have shooters who can shoot the lights out. We have post players who fight for every rebound. We have players who take an extra step to help their teammates by hustling and going for the loose balls. We have players who are brilliant defenders.” Each team member is valued for the energy they bring to the team.

At 5-4 wins for the season so far there is room for improvement. The team plans to continue to play to each other’s strengths. “We just have to keep fighting and keep working hard so we can end up being where we want to be at the end of the season”, says Marian.
