Sumanth Kola, a junior from India majoring in computer science, shares how his upbringing in a Hindu family and his journey into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reflect resilience, commitment, and a desire to make a difference.
An Opportunity for Higher Education
Growing up in a Hindu family, Kola was six years old when his entire family converted to Christianity and joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was baptized at eight and quickly embraced the values and teachings of the Church. "The Church and its gospel have played a significant role in my life and my family's," he said. "Living with my cousins, who are also members, made it easier and more desirable to live the gospel."
He first learned about BYU–Hawaii from a missionary companion who encouraged him to apply. "I always wanted to pursue higher education," Kola shared. "With the scholarships that BYU–Hawaii offered, it seemed like the right choice." For Kola, BYU–Hawaii represented not only a chance to grow academically but also a way to overcome the financial challenges that might have limited his opportunities back in India. "If not for BYU–Hawaii, I would have attended a local university in India, but the tuition would have been difficult to manage," he explained, highlighting the blessings of the IWORK Program.
“A Sure Foundation”
Reflecting on his journey, Kola appreciates the foundation that the Church has given him, especially in shaping his goals to serve a mission, pursue an education, and uphold his faith. His time at BYUH has deepened his testimony, especially through meaningful experiences like participating in the annual Church History Trip. "The testimonies of the pioneers and the material we studied strengthened my testimony of the restoration," he shared. "It’s experiences like these, and the amazing friends and professors here, that make me feel blessed to be a part of this university."
Looking Toward the Future
The Holokai curriculum at BYUH has also had a profound impact on Kola, giving him a well-rounded perspective and confidence beyond his computer science major. "The concept of focusing on different areas of study helps me see and understand other students' perspectives," Kola explained. As a qualitative research assistant in the university’s assessment department, he has already applied his interdisciplinary knowledge to his work, gaining experience in software and technical writing.
After graduation, Kola plans to return to India and work as a software engineer. His ambitions include securing an internship that will help him build industry connections and continue developing his skills. With his background in computer science and his experiences at BYUH, he is prepared to make a meaningful impact in his field.
Finding Strength and Joy
Throughout his time at BYU–Hawaii, Kola has grown spiritually, finding strength in the gospel-centered structure of the university. "The school’s classes and environment bring immense joy and a sense of comfort," he shared. "BYU–Hawaii provides a safe environment for me to practice and uphold the values and beliefs I learned during my childhood and later on my mission."
Sumanth Kola’s journey exemplifies how the power of faith, education, and enduring to the end transforms one into a disciple of Jesus Christ. As he looks toward the future, he hopes to use his skills and knowledge to serve and uplift others, inspired by the community and opportunities he has found at BYU–Hawaii.
