Brigham Young University–Hawaii is delighted to welcome Dr. Michael Morris as an assistant professor in the Faculty of Culture, Language & Performing Arts beginning in the Fall 2024 Semester. As the new head of the Theatre Program, Dr. Morris brings immense experience in theatre, business, and nonprofit leadership, aligning perfectly with BYU–Hawaii’s mission to foster academic and spiritual growth.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Dr. Morris’s academic journey began with his undergraduate studies at Harvard University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Russian literature and culture. During his time at Harvard, he joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a pivotal moment that significantly influenced his personal and professional trajectory. His introduction to the restored gospel of Jesus Christ at the National Boy Scout Jamboree led to his baptism and, later, service in the Russia Moscow Mission.

After his mission, Dr. Morris pursued a Master of Business Administration in organizational behavior and theory at Brigham Young University. His tenure at BYU expanded his academic and professional skills while shaping his perspective on education and teaching. His next step was to earn a Master of Arts in theatre from Tufts University, focusing on Soviet theatre with his thesis titled “The Socialist Construction of The Moscow Theater Festival 1933–1937.” He then completed a doctoral degree in theatre and performance studies at Tufts, with a dissertation titled “Theories for Corporate Theatre.”

He met his wife, Amy, while participating in the Nauvoo and British pageants. They are the parents of seven children and have served as foster parents, gaining insights into diverse communities and aligning with BYU–Hawaii’s mission to promote peace and unity. In his free time, he enjoys artistic projects and spending time with his family.

Dr. Morris’s career spans directing, producing, acting, and designing. His notable producing credits include “The Weaver of Raveloe and the Nauvoo Pageants. He has directed productions such as “Savior of the World” at the Church Conference Center and “Mogulesco: A Tale of the Yiddish Theater” at Tufts University. His acting experience includes “Porgy and Bess” with the LA Opera and roles in community theatres like “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Ragtime.”

In addition to his theatrical work, Dr. Morris has held significant roles in nonprofit organizations. His Master of Business Administration equipped him with skills in strategic management and organizational behavior, which he applied to develop strategic initiatives and lead fundraising efforts in various nonprofits.

Dr. Morris has previously taught at BYU and Tufts University, covering topics such as acting, theatre history, and the business of theatre. His research examines the organizational sociology of theatre, focusing on how commercial theatre functions as a cultural industry. His work explores the impact of economics, politics, and culture on theatrical practices, and his recent studies delve into applying organizational theories to corporate theatre.

At BYU–Hawaii, Dr. Morris will teach courses in business management and theater and direct all university productions. His first production, “You Can’t Take It With You,” will run from October 25 to November 2 in the McKay Auditorium.

Dr. Morris’s faith and personal experiences continue to shape his approach to education. His time at BYU instilled in him a holistic, Christ-centered perspective on teaching, which he is eager to bring to BYU–Hawaii. He values the university’s emphasis on cultural specificity, leadership, and intercultural unity. He views the stage as a powerful tool for building leadership, communication, and cultural understanding.
