As Fall Semester 2007 begins this week, campus security has issued some important reminders for the university 'ohana.
1. While traveling around the big circle (around which all country flags fly), traffic is to move one-way, counterclockwise. This includes bicycles and skateboards.
2. No bikes or skateboards are allowed in buildings or on sidewalks.
3. Please keep your doors and vehicles locked.
4. Report all suspicious activity to campus security, extension 3911.
5. Students on skateboards and bicycles are expected to obey all traffic laws, including stop signs.
"Hopefully students know these policies and obey them. They've been to orientation, but we want to make sure we double-up on that," said Helaman Kaonohi, assistant director of campus security. "Students need to remember that you can't just put your books and things down. People will take them. This is not elementary school, this is higher education learning, and we need to act like it," Kaonohi explained.
After the semester begins, if students violate the rules, they will be verbally warned. After that, they will be issued a $20 citation for each offense.
Kaonohi said he believes by observing these guidelines and cooperating, the semester will be safe and successful. "We want all of our students to be our eyes and ears," he said. "We need everybody working together. By them helping us, they will help themselves."
