WHEREAS, the richness and diversity of our State are due in large part to the invaluable personal contributions and meritorious acts of individuals who are committed to enhancing the community through their leadership and talents by serving the community and providing necessary services fulfilling the needs of the Church and community;
and
WHEREAS, E RIC SHUMWAY has dedicated his life to serving to the needs of Brigham Young University Hawaii, his church, and community, ERIC SHUMWAY’S illustrious career spans over forty-one years: beginning in 1966 with his first position as an English teacher, 1974, appointed Academic Vice President of BYU-Hawaii, 1991, named interim president of the Polynesian Cultural Center; 1992 appointed Dean of Liberal Arts College; 1994, inaugurated as eighth president of BYU-Hawaii, and serving as a bishop, stake president, and Area Authority Seventy in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and
WHEREAS, in addition to his dedication to the university, church and community, ERIC SHUMWAY has distinguished himself with numerous achievements such as establishing the Jonathan Napela Center for Hawaiian Language and Cultural Studies; the David O. McKay Center for Intercultural Understanding and Peace; and increasing university graduates from 320 to an average of 550 per year; and
WHEREAS, this outstanding citizen, together with his loving wife, Carolyn, is called to serve as president and matron of the Nuku’alofa Tonga LDS Temple in Tonga; now, therefore
The House of Representatives of the Twenty-fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2007, that this body hereby commends and applauds the achievements of ERIC SHUMWAY, and extends to Carolyn Shumway and family its warmest aloha and best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
