Student Alumni Association Sets Sail on Voyage of Faith Week

We can all spot those gold "LIVESTRONG" wristbands from far away. But this week, students all over campus will be wearing a crimson wristband to support another cause.

The Student Alumni Association of BYU-Hawaii is kicking off their summer Voyage of Faith scholarship drive, with funds benefiting the David O. McKay Legacy Endowment.

Starting Monday, August 1, a wide variety of activities are scheduled to take place, ranging from "Slip'n Slide softball" to a "Meet the President" BBQ.

"The activities set for this week will be great," said Jeremiah Lim, a sophomore from Singapore, Vice President of the SAA. "But the purpose behind these activities is what we're really trying to promote."

When asked what that purpose is, Jeremiah responded, "The spirit of giving...of contributing. BYUH has done so much for me, and for many other students. This fundraiser is a wonderful opportunity for me to give something back."

The unique thing about this particular drive is that, as in years past, student donations will be matched 6:1, thanks to a generous donor. In other words, every dollar a student donates (up to $25) will be matched by an additional six dollars. For example, a donation of $10 when matched by our campus friend ends up being a $60 donation. Faculty donations are matched 4:1 (up to $500).

This generous matching of donations will end after this August '05 drive is complete. There will be more drives, but the matching will be discontinued.

Those who donate to the fund will be given a "BYU-Hawaii" crimson wristband, which also grants entrance to the many activities planned throughout the week.

"This scholarship has an immediate effect on its recipients," said Wally Thiim, a Donor Liason with LDS Philanthropies. "It's a chance for students to help each other reach the priorities and goals that have been set."
