The Most Precious Gift of the Season

Festive strains of "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" rang through the Cannon Activities Center, launching BYU–Hawaii's once-a-year Christmas devotional, spearheaded by the Fine Arts Department. The theme, 'The Gifts of the Season: Songs and Stories of Christmas', unfolded through various musical performances, and was narrated by Craig Ferre, professor of theater and speech. Of all things Christmas, "perhaps the most meaningful celebrations ... are the simple exchanges of the heart, in which we manifest the love of God one to another," said Ferre.

After notable musical performances, Ferre spoke of family traditions wrapped in Christmas, and the glitter of lights, tinsel, and laudable goods that pointed toward a hope that was fulfilled in a manger over two thousand years earlier.

"The spirit of Christmas can't be purchased or unpacked from last year," he said. "It is found and felt in the heart. It is kindness and generosity.... Christmas is a season of hope and peace. It is coming home to share in the richness of being with kinfolk and friends. It is a time of worship, a time to mend wounds, to love and to be loved. These are the gifts we open at Christmas and then give away all year long."
