Activity on the Big Island (Hilo) is being closely monitored. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has given some 'guarded optimism' for a possible repeal of the current Tsunami Warning to an advisory or alert. Any 'All Clear' notification will delivered through civil defense operations and then reinforced through university communications methods.

A tsunami warning is in effect for all of the Hawaiian islands, including Oahu where BYU–Hawaii is located. Civil defense emergency preparedness plans are being carried out and the BYU–Hawaii campus emergency plan has been activated. Precautions are being taken to protect students and the entire University Ohana from the potential of a tsunami arriving on the Hawaiian coasts. University programming (testing center, library, labs, etc.) are closed on Saturday, February 27. Essential University services are still open, including food services for BYU–Hawaii students (both on and off campus students). The Polynesian Cultural Center is closed for the day.

The second floor of campus buildings is a safe zone for University students and on-campus personnel (TVA and Hales). Community members, including BYU-Hawaii faculty and staff, are encouraged to evacuate to designated tsunami evacuation sites (Behind Tennis Courts and General Classroom building (GCB), Quarry, Behind Treatment Plant, LDS Temple Hill, and Gunstock Ranch).

Please visit the City and County of Honolulu website at www.honolulu.gov for regular updates. We will also post updates pertaining to BYU–Hawaii on this web page as they are available.
