BYU-Hawaii Staff Tribute to Eric B. Shumway
This tribute was read by Judd Whetten, Wednesday, 20 June 2007, at the Grand Mahalo in honor of the Shumways.
I talked with Sione Feinga who was here when the Shumways arrived, fresh off the boat. During their early years in Hau’ula, they adapted quickly to the environment and blended into the unique and powerful culture of Aloha.

Grand Mahalo Honors Shumway's 41 Years of Service

A reception and program to honor retiring president, Eric B. Shumway and his family, was held Wednesday, 20 June 2007.
The Polynesian Cultural Center Promo Team, (watch video ) with ‘Sia Tonga as emcee, provided entertainment during the reception held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the patio area in front of the Cannon Activities Center. President and Sister Shumway greeted the many friends, faculty, staff, and students who came to participate in the event.

Les Steward Honored for Role on BYU-Hawaii Alumni Board

For the past five years, Les Steward has been quietly committed to serving the BYU-Hawaii Alumni Association Board. A 1973 graduate from then Church College of Hawaii, in Accounting and Business Management, Steward served as president-elect during Mike Foley’s term as president for two years. For the past three years he has served faithfully as president.

Shumway Honored; New President Installed at BYU-Hawaii Graduation

During a history-making BYU-Hawaii Commencement, 23 June 2007, President Eric B. Shumway was presented with an honorary Doctorate of Human Letters, from the LDS Church Board of Education. (watch video) In presenting the degree, Elder Richard G. Scott cited the numerous life-long achievements of President Shumway. He ended by saying that President Shumway had served with “spiritual depth and unwavering devotion as a teacher, servant, and friend. His service is always given in kindness,” said Elder Scott. “He calms the storms. His faith in Jesus Christ is vibrant. He is completely dedicated to serving the Lord.”

David Rainey Named Co-Valedictorian of BYU-Hawaii's June 2007 Graduating Class

David Rainey, has been named co-valedictorian with Grace Tin Yan Lee, for BYU-Hawaii’s June 2007 graduating class. Rainey is graduating with majors in Biology (Pre-Med) and Music (cello), and minors in Biochemistry and Mathematics. Although Rainey was born in Hailey, Idaho, as a child he also lived in South Korea, Utah, and California, before returning to Boise, Idaho, where his parents, Steven and Young Ju Rainey, currently reside.
“I’ve had wonderful opportunities to serve in the Church at BYU-Hawaii,” said Rainey. “I’ve also learned so much from the multi-cultural diversity on this campus.”

"I Am a Child of God" Topic of Beus Devotional

Yifen Beus, professor of International Cultural Studies at Brigham Young University Hawaii, spoke at the weekly devotional, Thursday, 14 June. Sister Beus was introduced by colleague, Cynthia Compton, as someone who loves languages and international cooking. A native of Taiwan, she was converted and baptized into the LDS Church while studying at Brigham Young University in Provo. “Cheerful dignity describes Yifen Beus,” said Sister Compton.
That quality was evident as Sister Beus shared her thoughts about the relationship of God to his children, and the relationship we should have with each other because he is our father. (Watch video clip. )

BYU-Hawaii Student Wins Elite Foreign-Study Scholarship
Dan Baird, a junior accounting major from Garden Grove, California, recently won a prestigious one-year National Security Educational Program (NSEP) Boren Scholarship that will enable him to study at the University of Bacau in northeastern Romania. He is believed to be the first BYU-Hawaii student to win this scholarship and the first American to study at the University of Bacau.
