BYU-Hawaii Concert Choir Tours China

 Mike Foley | University Advancement | May 2007 During three weeks in May 2007 the 64-voice Brigham Young University Hawaii Concert Choir will perform in Urumqi, Xian, Tianjin and Beijing, People’s Republic of China. (choir performance schedule )

In Beijing, under the direction of BYU-Hawaii music director Professor Michael Belnap — who has studied in Italy with world-renowned tenor Luciano Pavarotti, the choir will appear in the Forbidden City Concert Hall, participate in the “Meet in Beijing” Music Festival, and sing at the Great Wall of China.

The BYU-Hawaii Concert Choir has previously performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Metropolitan Opera City Concert Hall in Tokyo, and the Seoul Arts Center in South Korea.

       2007年5月,由64人组成的杨百翰大学夏威夷分校(Brigham Young University-Hawaii)合唱团将在中国的乌鲁木齐,西安,天津和北京进行为期三个礼拜的访问表演.

       在北京,合唱团将在世界著名男高音帕瓦洛蒂的学生,杨百翰大学夏威夷分校的音乐教授迈克尔·贝尔纳普的指挥下,在紫禁城音乐厅举行名为“相约在北京”的音乐演出,稍后还会在长城上演出.

       杨百翰大学夏威夷分校合唱团之前曾在纽约卡内基音乐厅,东京大都会歌剧城音乐厅,以及韩国音乐艺术中心等世界著名的音乐厅进行过演出.

       在过去几年的国际访问交流中,杨百翰大学夏威夷分校合唱团曾访问过新西兰,斐济,汤加,中国台湾和新加坡. 由该校学生组成的其它演出团体(包括波利尼西亚文化中心艺术团),曾在北京,武汉,深圳和香港等地献艺.

       杨百翰大学夏威夷分校合唱团的演出曲目中包括有无伴奏曲目和有伴奏曲目,其中有伴奏的曲目形式十分多样,从古典清唱剧目到世界各国民间音乐,以及美国音乐剧场选段,欧洲艺术音乐,美洲和南太平洋音乐.

       合唱团的的成员来自13个不同的国家,其中包括中国,蒙古,新西兰,韩国,日本,马来西亚,汤加,萨摩亚群岛和其它国家. 一半以上的合唱团成员能熟练使用两种语言.

自从杨百翰大学夏威夷分校在1955年创建以来,中国人民就是这所学校的重要组成部分. 在1921年,学校创始人麦基奥戴维,在访问夏威夷来耶镇之前,游历了北京,上海以及其它亚洲城市.

在访问来耶镇期间,他在附近的一所小学亲眼目睹了一群来自许多不同种族的小学生举行升旗仪式,这些学生中包括了华裔和其它亚裔. 受这件事的鼓舞,他仿佛展望到一所学校,在这里,来自不同种族和文化背景的学生能够和平共处并共同学习.

1979年中国大陆打开对外开放的大门之后,杨百翰大学夏威夷分校就开始积极探索建立友谊的机会. 1981年,第一批来自中国大陆的学生来到这所学校. 之后的每一年,都有来自中国大陆的学生在这个校园里学习.

"Not One Less" Star is Current BYU-Hawaii Student

On a Saturday in 1998, a car pulled into the village of Shuiquan in the Heiben province of the People’s Republic of China.  There was no school on Saturday, so 13 year-old Wei, Minzhi and her twin sister, Wei, Congzhi, were playing in the street with their friends.

The youngsters were curious to know what the people who got out of the car were doing.  They soon found out.  Although her twin was too nervous to sing, Minzhi sang and danced for the man behind the camera.  When asked if she would like to be an actress in a movie, Minzhi said, “Yes,” and wrote her name on the women’s hand so it would not be forgotten.

Forum Reviews Campus Security, Offers Counsel

In the wake of the recent Virginia Tech killings, a BYU-Hawaii campus forum was held Thursday, 19 April, to offer the campus community an opportunity to voice possible concerns. 

University President Eric B. Shumway shared a story of a young mother who wanted to do something for those who are victims of violence, but felt helpless.  As she sought the Lord’s guidance, the answer came that she could shed tears and pray for those who were suffering.

He endorsed the security plan on the BYU-Hawaii campus, and encouraged the campus community to be aware, but to also reach out to others with love.

Bradshaw Premieres Barlow Commission Composition

A Barlow Commission composition, “Delights & Shadows” was premiered Saturday, 24 March 2007, in the McKay Auditorium of Brigham Young University Hawaii in a recital presented by the School of Music.

Daniel Bradshaw’s new work was beautifully performed by Metropolitan Opera star, Ariel Bybee; Chicago Symphony violinist, Alison Dalton; and BYU-Hawaii faculty member, Stacy McCarrey, piano. Bradshaw’s music and Ted Kooser’s poetry made a beautiful marriage.
