Dr. Max Stanton, Professor of Anthropology and Geography, has retired after teaching at BYU-Hawaii for the past 35 years and left Laie this evening to undertake seven months of anthropological field studies.

Wednesday evening, BYU-Hawaii's Concert Choir departed for New York City on a one-week tour culminating in a performance at the world-famous Carnegie Hall. After weeks of daily rehearsal, the choir is ready and excited to see the "BigApple" and to perform Mozart's Requiem at the premiere hall.

Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the Presidency of the Seventy, in the keynote address of the BYU-Hawaii Women's Conference on May 19, said of President Gordon B. Hinckley, "We are led by the greatest temple builder of all mankind and all history."

The prestigious Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) recently approved a group of BYU-Hawaii students working closely with the administration, Assistant Psychology Professor Ronald M. Miller, and the Polynesian Cultural Center, to form a chapter on campus.

BYU-Hawaii President Eric B. Shumway addressed a large group of international students in a May 16 Student Alumni Association meeting on the importance of their commitment to return home after graduation, and how the university supports them in that commitment.

Kansas City, MO — The BYU-Hawaii women's tennis team, under coach David Porter, ended a perfect 27-0 season and reclaimed the NCAA II national championship title by defeating Armstrong Atlantic State, 5-3.

Mason Allred, a BYU-Hawaii junior history major from Las Vegas, Nevada, recently returned from a Student Research Associates Assistantships-funded trip to New York City where he presented a paper at the annual conference of the prestigious American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE).

At a special luncheon on May 1, BYU-Hawaii recognized academic and support departments that have used the university-wide assessment program to improve their offerings and services.

Staff | University Advancement | 1 May 2006 Two former Seasiders, and former teammates, were recently announced as the new men’s and women’s head soccer coaches, respectively, at Brigham Young University Hawaii. Jeff Miller, a former standout and team MVP, will begin to rebuild a men’s program that was dropped while he was an assistant during the 2000 season. The women’s team also announced a new head coach—Justin Wagar, who spent the past season as the interim head coach of the women's soccer team at Utah Valley State College. Wagar will have the task of building a program from the ground up as BYU-Hawaii adds women's soccer to its athletic program for the 2006-07 academic year.

BYU-Hawaii Athletic Director Ken Wagner said the school is excited about the new coaches and expressed confidence in their abilities to build their respective programs.

Elder Yoshihiko Kikuchi, a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy since 1977, shared words of encouragement and a powerful testimony during special meetings on April 20 with Korean and Japanese students at BYU-Hawaii.

Visiting BYU Professor Victor L. Ludlow took about 80 members and guests of the BYU-Hawaii Women's Organization luncheon meeting through a Jewish Passover seder on April 21 in the Aloha Center and explained the symbolic significance of the traditional meal to the group.

Staff | University Advancement | 21 April 2006 Laie, HI - Brigham Young University Hawaii has named former Hawaii State High School "Coach of the Year" Wendy Anae as the new head coach for its fledgling women's basketball team. Anae will have the task of building a program from the ground up as BYU-Hawaii adds women's basketball to its athletic program for the 2006-07 academic year.

Anae coached this past season at Timpview High School in Provo, Utah, where she took her young team to the Final Four in the Utah State High School Girl's Tournament. However, she is no stranger to Laie and the North Shore, having coached the Kahuku Red Raiders for three years from 2003-05 after serving as an assistant coach at Kahuku for four years previous to being named head coach.

Brigham Young University Hawaii art student Kisslan Chan was one of only 15 people to receive the Purchase Award, the top prize given at the Seventh InternationalArt Competition held in Salt Lake City, Utah on March 24th, 2006. More than 900submissions were entered into the competition, an event sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held at the Museum of Church History and Art.

Jorjana Brown delivered the final BYU-Hawaii entrepreneurship lecture of the school year April 11 on how she has grown her scrapbooking business from a small retail start-up into a manufacturing company that's part of a multibillion-dollar international industry.

BYU-Hawaii junior history major Spencer McBride's research paper on "The Catholic Conquest of California" won the "best undergraduate" prize on March 18, 2006, during the annual conference of the five major Hawaii universities in the regional chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honor society.
