Holding on With Faith

"Faith is in fact the antidote to doubt, the answer to skepticism, and the solution to cynicism," said Robert L. Millet, Abraham O. Smoot University Professor & BYU Professor of Ancient Scripture, at the Brigham Young University–Hawaii devotional on Tuesday, April 27, 2010, at the Cannon Activities Center.

Our faith in the church can help to alleviate the relatively small doubts that come about throughout our lives, said Millet. Quoting Elder Boyd K. Packer, Millet said, "You cannot force spiritual things. Such words as compel, coerce, constrain, pressure, demand do not describe our privileges with the Spirit. You can no more force the Spirit to respond than you can force a bean to sprout, or an egg to hatch before its time. You can create a climate to foster growth; you can nourish, and protect; but you cannot force or compel: You must await the growth."

He advised, "Keep the big picture and refuse to get bogged down in exceptions to the rule. Focus on fundamentals" and choose to have a great testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
