BYU-Hawaii's commencement ceremony on June 19 at the Cannon Activities
Center honored the largest graduating class in school history and also
included the largest number of international students.
Approximately 400 students from 37 countries donned black and silver gowns and caps, culminating four years of rigorous academic instruction. The number of students marks a new high for a June commencement, topping last June's total of 345 graduates. The 37 representing countries is also seven more than last year's high mark of 30.
Elder L. Tom Perry, a member of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, addressed the graduates on the shifting of values in our present day society.

BYU-Hawaii senior Lindsay Yamauchi is making the most of her college
academic experience through a "student research associateship" that allows
undergradate students on campus to participate directly in a professor's
research agenda.
When the opportunity to do such an associateship came, Yamauchi, an Oahu native and double major in International Cultural Studies-Anthropology and History, jumped on it and hasn't looked back since.
"When the opportunity arrived, I couldn't believe it," she said. "It came at a pivotal point in my college career, at a time when I had no idea of what direction I needed to take to attain the next level in my education. I knew the offer came as a blessing from Heavenly Father, so I took it. That is the main reason as to why I became so interested in the program."

A visiting psychology professor from BYU-Idaho met with BYU-Hawaii students on Feb.24, to discuss stress management techniques and effective methods of handling the day-to-day rigors of student life.
Speaking during an academic forum organized by the psychology club on campus, neuropsychologist Dr. Edward W. Kinghorn told students in attendance that "90 percent of us will be involved in some traumatic event" during some point of our lives.
Kinghorn said even stable people are often unprepared for such overwhelming experiences and emphasized the necessity of "educational debriefing" so that individuals undergoing the trauma can realize some of the changes going on with their bodies both psychologically and physically.

Keith Pierce, a local entrepreneur and president of the BYU-Hawaii 1st Stake for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, told BYU-Hawaii business students that the success of his contracting company stemmed from his reliance on the Lord and willingness to keep the commandments.
Addressing students and faculty in the first entrepreneurship lecture of 2004 in the McKay Auditorium, Pierce, who operates Pierce Construction throughout the Hawaiian Islands, emphasized specific business principles that have made his name well known locally.
Pierce explained that when he first started out, he wanted to be successful in whatever he decided to do as a career. He returned in 1986 to Laie where his extended family was living, to start his own business in contracting and
