Porter Inducted Into USPTA Division Hall of Fame

Staff | University Advancement | 19 October 2005 Brigham Young University Hawaii's Head Tennis Coach, Dr. David Porter, was inducted into the United States Professional Tennis Association's (USPTA) Hawaii Division Hall of Fame Tuesday, October 18.

“I am very honored to have been selected and inducted into the USPTA Hawaii Division Hall of Fame,” said Porter. “It was a very special moment for me. I am thankful to my wife Lorrie for the support she has given me during the many times I have been away on USPTA business.”

Porter becomes just the second person inducted into the Hawaii Division, joining Jim Schwitters, former University of Hawaii Tennis Coach.

Staff | University Advancement | 17 October 2005 Lady Seasider Julia Ustyuzhanina won the NCAA Division II singles title at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Small College Championships, held in Ft. Myers, Florida, on Saturday, October 15. Ustyuzhanina defeated Suzanna Cavalcante of West Florida 6-4, 6-0 in the championship match.

"That sounds good to me," said Gladys Knight who, along with husband William McDowell, was officially greeted Friday morning by BYU-Hawaii President Eric B. Shumway at the McKay Foyer. A host of media lined up to welcome her as well, asking questions and taking photos of her first visit to the university.

"The faces on this campus are just beautiful," said Knight. "All the different cultures make BYU-Hawaii just so special. I love it."

A reenactment of the life and contributions made by a man, known to many simply as Napela, took place Thursday, October 13, at the McKay Auditorium.
