2015 Evening of Concertos Concert BYU-Hawai‘i

On Wednesday, November 25th, 2015, at 7:30 p.m. in the McKay Auditorium, the BYU-H Music Department presents An Evening of Concertos, featuring the BYUH Concert Choir, members of the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra [HSO], musicians from the BYUH Chamber Orchestra, and the 2015 Concerto Competition winners: Ayaka Kinjo (piano), Sun Mi Jin (violin), Cameron Abaroa (baritone), Sydney Nemrow (soprano), Kaylee Buss (soprano), Koko Ihira (saxophone), David M. Kinikini (piano), and Joshua Wallace (percussion).

President Henry B. Eyring Installs President Tanner as Tenth President

John S. Tanner was officially inaugurated as the tenth president of BYU–Hawaii by President Henry B. Eyring, First Counselor in the First Presidency, on Tuesday, November 10, 2015. President Eyring presided over the meeting which was conducted by Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Other speakers included Elder Kim B. Clark, of the Seventy and Commissioner of Education, and representatives of faculty, alumni and students.

Elder D. Todd Christofferson Visits BYU-Hawaii: Commencement, Dedication, Commemoration

Elder D. Todd Christofferson, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, addressed graduates at the BYU-Hawaii commencement ceremony in Laie, Hawaii. His visit also included a fireside in commemoration of the 150th Anniversary celebration of the LDS Church in Laie, as well as a rededication ceremony for the recently refurbished dormitories on BYUH campus.

Anniversary Book Honors 60 Years of BYU–Hawaii

A landmark new book celebrates the 60th anniversary of Brigham Young University–Hawaii and the 150th anniversary of Laie as a gathering place for Latter-day Saints. The university has planned events in late October and early November to celebrate the anniversaries and this new volume of history, entitled Prophetic Destiny: The First 60 Years.

Quilting a Success

Al Doan ’08, is changing the face of his community in Hamilton, Missouri, with his family-based quilting business. Doan, who graduated with a degree in information systems and a minor in political science, was recently recognized by the Small Business Association with the 2015 Small Business Persons of the Year Award, for his fast growing and successful family company, the Missouri Star Quilt Company.

The BYU–Hawaii Student Chapter has once again qualified to receive the highest honor given to chapters worldwide from the BYU Marriott School’s Management Society, the Dean’s Chapter Gold Award. Representatives of the BYU–Hawaii student chapter, including chapter president Josaia Moimoi, a Business Management and Accounting major student from Fiji, attended the annual Global Leadership Conference held in Aspen Grove and Provo, Utah, on October 1-2.

Legal Studies Prepares Students for Careers, Law School

The study of law can be daunting. But now students at BYU–Hawaii can have an edge with the recently addition of the Legal Studies program and a certificate to go with their major. Students enrolled in the program can earn a 15-credit Legal Studies Certificate which they can complete by finishing courses in areas such as legal research and writing, international legal drafting and transactions, and comparative law.

Celebrating a Coach and a Legend

Norman Kaluhiokalani, commonly known as Coach K. all across the campus of Brigham Young University–Hawaii, is retiring after 40 years of working and coaching at BYU–Hawaii, leaving a legacy of coaching for the cross-country, soccer, and rugby teams that have played at the university. His last name, Kaluhiokalani, means in Hawaiian, “One who helps much for many without asking for any admiration.”

Finding a personal connection to the historic and prophetic purposes of the University was the theme of President John and Sister Susan Tanner first Devotional address to the students, faculty and staff of BYU–Hawaii on Tuesday, August 4. Both speakers focused their instruction on principles found in President David O. McKay’s inspired addresses at the campus groundbreaking 60 years ago (1955), and at the campus dedication three years later (1958).
