Leadership Summit Aims to Help, Plan and Inspire Great Ideas

Imagine everyone at BYU–Hawaii bringing their ideas together to inspire and create better futures. That is what this fall's Leadership Summit Great Ideas Exchange conference aims to accomplish. The BYU–Hawaii Center for International Entrepreneurship invites all students from every major to benefit from the event, which will take place from November 5 to November 6.

Real-life Advantages of the New Academic Calendar

First Term has begun at Brigham Young University–Hawaii, introducing the first full school year under the new academic calendar, and administrators say they can already see the benefits. Some of the positive outcomes reported are facilities being utilized year-round, an increase of parents in attendance at orientation with their children, more than 1,250 First Term students were able to continue their studies, and the university is offering more credits in 2009 than in 2008. Vice President of Academics Max Checketts said that facts already show the university’s three main objectives created under the direction of President Steven C. Wheelwright are being accomplished because of the new academic schedule, which are:

BYU–Hawaii Alumnus Called to the First Quorum of the Seventy

BYU–Hawaii alumnus, Elder Yoon Hwan Choi (pictured top with wife Sister Bon Kyung Koo Choi; photo courtesy of ldschurchnews.com), was sustained to serve in the First Quorum of the Seventy, during the 179th Annual General Conference of the Church, in April. Before Elder Choi’s call to the Seventy, he served as bishop’s counselor, bishop, high councilor, stake mission president, stake president’s counselor, stake president, and served in the Eighth Quorum of the Seventy in the Asia North Area.

Devotional Speaker Preview: Elder David S. Baxter

The upcoming devotional speaker on Tuesday, June 9, 2009, will be Elder David S. Baxter of the First Quorum of the Seventy. Elder Baxter, of Stirling, Scotland, served as an Area Seventy from 2002 to 2006 before his call to the First Quorum of the Seventy in 2006.

Glade Tew Announced as New Dean of the College of Business, Computing and Government

Dr. Glade Tew was approved as the new Dean of the College of Business, Computing and Government by the Board of the Church Education System, Wednesday, May 13. The announcement regarding Tew's appointment was made on Thursday, May 14, first to the faculty and staff of the College, and then to the University Ohana through a special bulletin email. Tew will begin his service the second week of June.
