PCC Opens New “Ukulele Experience”

The Polynesian Cultural Center is launching Oahu’s newest exhibit featuring Hawaii’s official state instrument, the ukulele. A grand opening of the new exhibit, Ukulele Experience, will be held on Friday, April 29, 2016, from 5:00-8:30 PM at the Hukilau Marketplace in Laie, Hawaii.

Dr. Craig Ferre Finishes As He Started

To conclude his time here at BYU–Hawaii, theater and speech professor Craig Ferre will be directing the same play with which he began his BYU–Hawaii career 35 years ago. The cast, a collection of students and original cast members, will put on a final production of “Arsenic and Old Lace.”

Women’s Tennis are PacWest Champs

The top-ranked BYU–Hawaii women's tennis team recorded their 10th PacWest Championship in as many years with a 5-1 defeat of No. 9 Hawaii Pacific on Saturday, April 16, at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Center in Surprise, Arizona. This was the ninth time the Seasiders (22-0) and Sharks (15-5) met in the finals of the conference championship.

Free Rides Bike Sharing Program Piloted

This week, students are seeing a fleet of green bikes around campus. The bikes are part of a new idea for a transportation program being tested called “Free Rides.” Fifty-two bikes, identified by their bright green frames and red ID plates, are spread out across campus that students can use ideally for getting from class to class. The rules are simple: ride at your own risk, do not lock up the bikes, and keep them within the community.

Elder Yoon Hwan Choi and his wife Bon Kyung Koo spoke to BYU–Hawaii students and the campus community on Tuesday, March 29, 2016, bringing with them advice to seek to know the mind and will of the Lord, and then have the courage and faith to do what we should do. Elder and Sister Choi, who are both alumni of Brigham Young University–Hawaii, spoke together, sharing personal experiences from their time at the University, his perspective as a convert to the LDS Church, and how they faced the challenges of raising a family and providing meaningful service in their country, community and the kingdom of God.

Tuvalu Prime Minister visits BYU–Hawaii

The Prime Minister of the island nation of Tuvalu, Enele Sopoaga, came to Laie, Hawaii, on Friday, March 18, for a visit to BYU–Hawaii during a weeklong trip to Oahu. While at BYU–Hawaii, the Prime Minister met with President John S. Tanner, took a tour of campus, addressed a student group, and participated in a review of an ongoing educational project that had its beginnings with BYU–Hawaii’s Enactus student chapter. Accompanying the Prime Minister was his wife Saililo Enele, and Samuelu Teo, a member of the Tuvaluan Parliament.

New Bike Lane Opens, Improves Campus

A counter-flow bike lane now runs on the inner perimeter of the big circle, making it easier for those on bikes, skateboards and non-motorized scooters to get to places on campus. With the addition of the new bike lane, cyclists and skateboarders can now travel clockwise, or opposite to the regular one-way traffic lane, around the big circle.

Salsa and Brass: Performing Groups Take to the Garden Isle of Kauai

Two performing groups from BYU–Hawaii’s Music and Visual Arts department took their talent on the road with a four-day tour to the island of Kauai on February 11-14, 2016. The two groups were the Salsa Orchestra and Brass Ensemble, led by creative directors Dr. Darren Duerden and Dr. David Kammerer.

Student Entrepreneur Wins Regional Award

The Honolulu chapter of Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO) recently named Kevan Hendrickson, a graduating senior at Brigham Young University–Hawaii and Marketing Director of Morph Studios, the winner of a regional qualifying round for the Global Student Entrepreneur Awards (GSEA). The GSEA program aims to inspire and support young entrepreneurs, providing opportunities for students to showcase their businesses and network with influential corporate leaders.
