Hospitality and Tourism Program Among Best in Nation

BYU–Hawaii’s Hospitality and Tourism Management program was recently ranked among the top tourism degrees in the nation by TheBestSchools.org. The list includes both bachelor’s and master’s degree programs, with factors such as faculty, reputation, ranking, quality of the program, awards, and courses offered as ranking criteria.

Hula Preservation Society Recovers Rare Footage

Brigham Young University–Hawaii and the Hula Preservation Society have joined together to restore video footage of Hawaiian greats from the 1980s. The footage has not been seen since the original performances and will be shown in a community presentation on Saturday, July 20, at the Polynesian Cultural Center.

Fostering mentoring relationships for women

The first Women’s Professional Advancement Day was held at BYU–Hawaii on May 30. There were workshops, mentoring appointments, networking opportunities, and a panel discussion to develop a culture of mentoring among women on campus. The idea to have mentoring and educational experiences on the BYU–Hawaii campus stemmed Debbie Hippolite Wright’s, vice president of Student Development and Services, experiences with Women Leaders in Higher Education. Faculty, staff and students were invited to attend to learn how to better themselves and advance in careers.

Elder Richard J. Maynes to Address BYU–Hawaii Graduates

Approximately 550 students representing 46 different countries will participate in the upcoming BYU–Hawaii commencement exercises on Saturday, April 13, 2013. Out of the 46 countries represented, this is the first graduation to include a graduate from the British Virgin Islands and Lebanon. Addressing the graduates will be Elder Richard J. Maynes, Presidency of the Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Commencement will be held at 9:30 AM in the George Q. Cannon Activities Center and will be streamed live online.

Spirit Week 2013

Spirit Week begins Monday, February 11, with “Seasider Red Day.” Students, faculty and staff across campus donned red apparel to honor the birthday anniversary of BYU–Hawaii. Daily activities along with campus-wide dress themes will take place all week. Spirit Week is a series of events highlighting the ground breaking of the Church College of Hawaii, now BYU–Hawaii, that occurred on February 12, 1955, by David O. McKay.
