The May 1 issue of Consumers Digest Magazine named BYU-Hawaii as the number-one "top value" among private colleges and universities in the U.S. BYUH previously received the same designation in 2004.

During three weeks in May 2007 the 64-voice Brigham Young University Hawaii Concert Choir will perform in Urumqi, Xian, Tianjin and Beijing, People’s Republic of China. (choir performance schedule )
In Beijing, under the direction of BYU-Hawaii music director Professor Michael Belnap — who has studied in Italy with world-renowned tenor Luciano Pavarotti, the choir will appear in the Forbidden City Concert Hall, participate in the “Meet in Beijing” Music Festival, and sing at the Great Wall of China.
The BYU-Hawaii Concert Choir has previously performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Metropolitan Opera City Concert Hall in Tokyo, and the Seoul Arts Center in South Korea.

On a Saturday in 1998, a car pulled into the village of Shuiquan in the Heiben province of the People’s Republic of China. There was no school on Saturday, so 13 year-old Wei, Minzhi and her twin sister, Wei, Congzhi, were playing in the street with their friends.
The youngsters were curious to know what the people who got out of the car were doing. They soon found out. Although her twin was too nervous to sing, Minzhi sang and danced for the man behind the camera. When asked if she would like to be an actress in a movie, Minzhi said, “Yes,” and wrote her name on the women’s hand so it would not be forgotten.

In the wake of the recent Virginia Tech killings, a BYU-Hawaii campus forum was held Thursday, 19 April, to offer the campus community an opportunity to voice possible concerns.
University President Eric B. Shumway shared a story of a young mother who wanted to do something for those who are victims of violence, but felt helpless. As she sought the Lord’s guidance, the answer came that she could shed tears and pray for those who were suffering.
He endorsed the security plan on the BYU-Hawaii campus, and encouraged the campus community to be aware, but to also reach out to others with love.
Elder Gale Bryce, a volunteer service missionary at the Polynesian Cultural Center, explained in the heavily attended April 17 School of Computing InForm meeting how two former colleagues used "wordprint" statistical analyses to authenticate Book of Mormon authorship.

A Barlow Commission composition, “Delights & Shadows” was premiered Saturday, 24 March 2007, in the McKay Auditorium of Brigham Young University Hawaii in a recital presented by the School of Music.
Daniel Bradshaw’s new work was beautifully performed by Metropolitan Opera star, Ariel Bybee; Chicago Symphony violinist, Alison Dalton; and BYU-Hawaii faculty member, Stacy McCarrey, piano. Bradshaw’s music and Ted Kooser’s poetry made a beautiful marriage.
• The BYU-Hawaii Concert Choir, under the direction of Music and Vocal Professor Michael K. Belnap, is the university’s premier SATB ensemble. They perform a cappella and accompanied choral literature ranging from classical oratorio literature to international folk music, American musical theater selections, and art music of Europe, the Americas, and the South Pacific.
The BYU-Hawaii Mark and Laura Willes Center for International Entrepreneurship and the Gene and Allyson Yamagata Foundation recently sponsored the second annual Japan Business Plan Competition, which drew 29 teams, and are planning to extend the program to several other Asian countries.
Michael Belnap, originally from Valier, Montana, is a Professor of Music and Voice and director of the Concert Choir at Brigham Young University Hawaii.
As a student at BYU-Hawaii, Chad Ford first heard President McKay’s prophecy when President Shumway was inaugurated. “I remember sitting in that audience,” he said, “and really feeling the Spirit and being overpowered by all of this—the first time I’d heard it forcefully talked about that way. My first reaction was to look around the auditorium. I knew a lot of cool students from a lot of cool places—people I thought were going to go back and be prime ministers and CEOs. I wondered which of these people President McKay was talking about.”
The 64-voice Brigham Young University Hawaii Concert Choir will perform in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, on Friday, 25 May in a joint concert with the Mongolian College of Music & Dance in the Opera Theatre at Sukhbaatar Square and Saturday, 26 May, in the Cultural Palace, following a three-week tour in China.
