The Lord Can 'Coach' Us in a Variety of Ways

BYU-Hawaii business professor William "Bill" Hsu encouraged those who "feel
so overwhelmed with things, so stressed out that we feel like throwing in
the towel... [to] call a time-out, take a deep breath, get over to the
sidelines and talk things over with your Heavenly Father," in his May 13
devotional address.
"Is your life so busy you hardly have time to take a time out?" he said. "Or in life's game, do you have a challenge in controlling your temper or your language? Are school subjects pulling you down? And most important of all, are you trying to do it alone? Or are you smart enough to call time-out and ask the coach for help?"

Student Reaps Benefits from Research Associateship Program

BYU-Hawaii senior Lindsay Yamauchi is making the most of her college
academic experience through a "student research associateship" that allows
undergradate students on campus to participate directly in a professor's
research agenda.
When the opportunity to do such an associateship came, Yamauchi, an Oahu native and double major in International Cultural Studies-Anthropology and History, jumped on it and hasn't looked back since.
"When the opportunity arrived, I couldn't believe it," she said. "It came at a pivotal point in my college career, at a time when I had no idea of what direction I needed to take to attain the next level in my education. I knew the offer came as a blessing from Heavenly Father, so I took it. That is the main reason as to why I became so interested in the program."

BYU-Hawaii Students Develop Underwater Robotics

BYU-Hawaii seniors Anuj Sehgal and Jason Kadarusman are developing a low
cost autonomous underwater robot.
The robot is designed to recognize and track objects in an underwater environment. Such technology is used to inspect underwater pipeline, mechanical, or electrical systems and explore deep-sea marine life and ship wreckage, explained Leslie Fife, assistant professor of computer science and faculty supervisor of the project.
Sehgal, who is from India and Kadarusman, from Indonesia, were inspired by a robotics class taught by Tim Stanley, professor in computer science and faculty supervisor. Stanley took his students to an underwater robot demonstration in Honolulu. Shortly thereafter, Seghal and Kadarusman began working on a robot of their own.

Terry Warner, BYU Professor of philosophy and founder of the Arbinger
Institute, told BYU-Hawaii students that the many differences and divisions
that separate all people "are not what the Lord wants for us."
"In every group of civilized people there are rankings or separations," Warner said at the College of Arts & Sciences University Seminar on March 30. "We feel a division between the generations, or between us and other sub-cultures, or between ourselves and those who seem more successful. These separations might be called culture."

Concert Choir to Perform International Tour Program

The BYU-Hawai'i Concert Choir will present Na Leo Malu: Voices of Peace in
the McKay Auditorium, April 2, at 6 and 8 p.m.
Under the direction of Dr. James A. Smith, the 50-member choir is preparing to perform in the premier concert halls of Japan and Korea during an 18-day tour beginning May 18. Proceeds from five primary concerts will be donated to local charities.
"The choir is excited to represent the university on this tour," said V. Napua Baker, Vice President of University Advancement. "With over 150 students from Japan and 120 from Korea on campus, we feel it is important to be more visible in those countries."

Chrisman Named to Daktronics All-American Team

BYU-Hawaii junior forward Jake Chrisman earned Daktronics NCAA II Third Team
All-American honors today as voted on by the nation's College Sports
Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Chrisman was one of only three juniors among the 15 players honored with All-American status by CoSIDA and Daktronics. Earlier this month Chrisman was honored by the group as an All-West Region First Team performer.
Chrisman, a junior from Provo, Utah, became just the fourth player in BYU-Hawaii history to average over 20 points per game as he led the PacWest Conference and was eighth nationally with a 23.3 points per game average during the season and playoffs.

Events Producer Shares Lessons From Successes, Failures

The head of Hawaii's largest events production company shared lessons he has learned from his successes and failures over the past quarter-century with BYU-Hawaii business students during the March 16 entrepreneurship lecture.
Mike Rossell, president of Production Hawaii, Inc., said the events staging and management company grew as a "natural progression" from his first business providing temporary hires, which enabled him "to discover certain types of equipment that were helpful to my clients."
He started importing large portable loading ramps for facilities that didn't have loading docks. "Almost nobody has a loading dock in Hawaii. We sold a lot of the ramps...and fast. We had no competitors," Rossell said, describing this situation as a "natural monopoly -- a monopoly without

Seasider Men Lose in NCAA II West Regional Semifinal Round

San Bernardino, CALIFORNIA – After a dramatic 67-61 victory over the University of Alaska-Anchorage in the opening round of the NCAA II West Regional Tournament on March 12, the BYU-Hawaii men’s basketball team lost the semifinal match on March 13 to Humboldt State, 71-61, despite a heroic, 34-point performance from junior Jake Chrisman.
Chrisman, playing with nine stitches over his left eye from an injury sustained in the win over Alaska-Anchorage, hit 15 of 26 shots and pulled down seven rebounds to keep the Seasiders in the game, but it wasn't enough as BYU-Hawaii ended the season with a 23-6 record.
