Elder Gerrit W. Gong of the Seventy taught BYU–Hawaii students, faculty and staff to “Be Not Afraid, Only Believe” at the weekly campus Devotional on Tuesday, September 24. Elder Gong presented his message of encouragement as advice on making some of life’s biggest decisions.
The BYU-Hawaii Service Center recently partnered with the Oahu-based environmental group Sustainable Coastlines to help clean the Kaka'ako waterfront. The project, which was aimed at helping to keep the shoreline clean and beautiful, took place on Saturday, August 10.
Elder Larry W. Gibbons, former member of the Second Quorum of the Seventy, gave a Devotional talk entitled “Are You in Control?” on Tuesday, September 17, in the Cannon Activities Center at BYU–Hawaii. Focusing on doctrine, principles and application, Elder Gibbons outlined his counsel related to the importance of self-control.
"The standard the Lord has for each of us is one of action, communication and love," said President Steven C. Wheelwright during the university's first Devotional of the Fall 2013 semester. The Devotional, held in the Cannon Activities Center at BYU–Hawaii on September 10, 2013, was entitled "Am I My Brother's Keeper?"
CES Devotional Address
This past summer, a group of students from BYU–Hawaii went to Fiji to make a difference in the educational system of the island nation. The seven students worked under the supervision of Dr. Ronald Miller, BYU–Hawaii psychology professor, and Dr. Frank C. Worrell, graduate professor at the University of California, Berkeley.
As many who are associated with BYU–Hawaii already know, this year marks the 50th anniversary of the Polynesian Cultural Center located next to the university’s Laie, Hawaii campus. Originally dedicated on October 12, 1963, the Center helps about 600-700 students fund their education every semester, and it has always been a place where students can learn life skills. “The Polynesian Cultural Center has contributed to my understanding of the spirit of Aloha,” said Thanathon Phosricha, an alumnus from Thailand who worked there as a tour guide. “This motivates me to improve the world around me and to be a better example everywhere.”
Dr. Dan W. Andersen, former president of Church College of Hawaii/Brigham Young University–Hawaii, and a former member of the Polynesian Cultural Center board, passed away Tuesday, August 20, 2013.
Elder Russell M. Nelson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will address young single and married adults in a CES Devotional broadcast on Sunday, September 8, at 2 PM in the Cannon Activities Center. The devotional will be broadcast worldwide via the web at MormonChannel.org, CESDevotionals.lds.org, and the Church’s Facebook page (under ‘Live Broadcast’), and on BYU Television.

Since the university’s announcement of the Nine Semesters in Residence (9SiR) program in 2012, the course of the school year has changed dramatically for both students and faculty. Deans, department chairs, and individual faculty members have organized curriculum to help students reach their academic goals in efficient and fair ways. Over a year later, this new graduation policy has seen many successes due to the campus-wide effort to integrate the change.

The list includes both bachelor’s and master’s degree programs, with factors such as faculty, reputation, ranking, quality of the program, awards, and courses offered as ranking criteria.
