On Tuesday, March 18, 2014, students and the campus community will gather in the Cannon Activity Center for the weekly Devotional. The speaker for this particular devotional is Sheri L. Dew. Dew is an author of several books, including biographies of two presidents of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served as a member of the General Relief Society Presidency of the Church from 1997-2002. She was named CEO of Deseret Book Company in March 2002 and currently serves as a member of both the BYU Marriott School of Management’s National Advisory Council and the President’s Leadership Council for BYU–Hawaii.
In January, the BYU–Hawaii neuroscience lab received notice that an article written by the lab was published by Oxford University Press. The lead author, John Meyers, is the president of the American Board of Professional Neuropsychology. The co-authors are Dr. Ronald Miller, BYU–Hawaii professor, and six BYU–Hawaii students, four of whom have graduated and two whom are still here on campus.
Earl Morris is the new director of security at BYU–Hawaii, replacing Roy Yamamoto who recently retired after serving the BYU–Hawaii campus in security for nine years.
Students, faculty, staff, and community members are all invited to the second annual Marketing Week Career Day on Friday, February 28, 2014. Career Day will be filled with workshops and a keynote address presented by some of the foremost marketers in Hawaii. Also, finalists in the Idea Zoo Case Competition will present their final reports for chances to win prizes. After the keynote address, the winners of the Idea Zoo competition will be announced, and a drawing will be held for cash prizes involving anyone who attends at least two workshops and the keynote address. There will also be a networking reception later that evening. Anyone is invited to all events, free of charge. The full schedule is as follows:
BYU–Hawaii’s new Center for Learning and Teaching is hosting its first symposium, themed “All Things Shall Become New: Becoming the Best Teacher in You, Again and Again.” The symposium will be on Thursday and Friday, February 27-28, on the BYU–Hawaii campus. The event is free and open to the public.

In October of 2013, BYU–Hawaii’s chapter of BYU Management Society was the only student chapter to win the Dean’s Gold Award of Excellence at the Management Society’s annual Global Leadership Conference, where BYU–Hawaii students, faculty, and staff were well-represented as participants and speakers. The Dean’s Gold Award of Excellence is awarded to chapters who meet requirements of leadership, activity, and service.
The 2014 David O. McKay Lecture will take place on Thursday, February 13, 2014, at 11:00 AM in the Cannon Activities Center. When first created in 1962, the Lecture Series was designed to afford distinguished members of the faculty the opportunity to present insights from their fields of study and their reflections on the gospel. Today, it continues to achieve this outcome. Lecturers are nominated by fellow faculty members and approved by the Board of Trustees. The title of David O. McKay Lecturer remains one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon faculty members at BYU–Hawaii.
David Taufa, Heather Pohiva, and Selai Unga graduated from BYU–Hawaii with Accounting degrees in the summer of 2013. While they all had different career plans upon returning to their home country of Tonga, none of them expected the opportunity that opened up for them to use the skills they learned from BYU–Hawaii within the Tongan government.

BYU–Idaho President Kim B. Clark addressed students and the campus community on Tuesday, January 21, 2014, focusing his remarks on truths revealed through living prophets. His talk, entitled “Joseph Smith: The Prophet of the Restoration,” focused on the life and work of the prophet Joseph Smith.
BYU–Hawaii welcomes David Te’o as the new Director of Information Technology Infrastructure. Te’o, a native of Laie, most recently worked within the R&K Cyber Solutions’ Defense Intelligence Agency and previously as a systems administrator with numerous facilities on the island. These positions have given him over a decade of IT work experience as well as invaluable skills, training, and credentials in information systems management.
